Job Forum and Resume Critique

The Northern California Chapter of the Product Development & Management Association (www.norcalpdma.org) is sponsoring a panel discussion on Product Development Employment Trends in the current economy. A diverse panel of experts will provide unique insights into ways you can make this challenging time work for you.

Panel Topics:

  • Industry trends: Which industries are still viable and hiring? Where are the growth sectors?
  • Professional development: Is it still possible to transfer skills from one industry to another? What skills need enhancing?
  • Resumes: What stands out and grabs their attention; what annoys; which skills are screened for.

Following the panel presentation, Mehrdad Moaveni, Managing Partner of Capstone Search Partners, will lead the audience in a critique of their own resumes pointing out the pitfalls, identifying ideal formats and guiding the evaluation process once you get a response from your resume.

If you're interested in answers to any of the above panel topics then you should attend this event. Then, take the opportunity to apply what you learned from the panel in this hands-on session.

During the course of the past 20 years, Marty has served as an executive responsible for defining and building products for some of the most successful companies in the world, including Hewlett-Packard, Netscape Communications, America Online, and eBay. Marty began his career at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories conducting research on software technology, and then moved into the product side of HP, as the first member of HP’s Software Engineering Systems Division, specializing in products for software developers.

After HP, Marty joined a then very young Netscape Communications Corporation, where he had the opportunity to participate in the birth of the Internet industry. Marty worked directly for co-founder Marc Andreessen, where he was vice-president for Netscape’s platform and tools, and later e-commerce applications, and worked to help Internet start-ups understand and utilize the newly emerging technology. Netscape provided the opportunity to define and build products for both enterprises and consumers. When America Online acquired Netscape, Marty ran a division responsible for leveraging the product technology developed at Netscape across the many AOL and later Time Warner internet properties. As vice-president of AOL Products, Marty was able to learn first-hand about the requirements which come from very large scale, mass-market consumer services.

From AOL, Marty joined eBay as vice-president of product management and design, responsible for defining products and services for their global e-commerce trading site. eBay provided the opportunity to learn about the requirements that come from very large, active communities transacting online via the world’s largest e-commerce site.

During his career, Marty has personally performed and managed most of the roles of a modern software product organization, including software development, product management, user interface design, usability engineering, technical writing, software testing, product marketing, engineering management, and general management. Marty is a graduate of the University of California at Santa Cruz with B.A. degrees in Computer Science and Applied Economics (1981), and of the Stanford University Executive Institute (1994).

Andy Cohen is Senior Vice President for Sales and Marketing for Instill, a (profitable!) enterprise spend management ASP. Andy is responsible for sales, marketing, product management and business development. Andy has 12 years of experience in all aspects of product management. He began his career as a brand manager at S.C. Johnson & Son, managing the development of consumer products. He then made a switch to technology, managing the development and launch of the country's first online grocery shopping service at Peapod. After Peapod, Andy joined Intuit where he lead the business and product effort behind the launch of Quicken.com, which at its peak was the top personal finance site on the web. At Instill, Andy has gained experience in enterprise application product management, leading the development and launch of a complete suite of supply chain applications that are being used by Coca-Cola, Subway, Pizza Hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Taco Bell.

Andy has a unique perspective of managing product development for both consumers and enterprises, and brings a packaged goods market research perspective to the product development process. Andy has hired and developed dozens of product managers and product marketers and currently leads a team of ten professionals at Instill. Andy has a BA from Stanford University and an MBA from Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management.
